Domaine Georges Roumier, founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, is a renowned family-owned estate in Chambolle-Musigny, Burgundy. Initially expanding through sharecropping, the domaine now cultivates prestigious vineyards like Bonnes Mares, Musigny, and Clos de Vougeot. Winemaking, passed through generations, is now led by Christophe Roumier, who emphasizes precision and terroir expression. The wines, crafted with meticulous care, are known for their seductive fruitiness, aging potential, and finesse. Grapes are hand-sorted, mostly destemmed, and fermented in wooden vats, with limited use of new oak. The unique limestone, marl, and clay soils of Chambolle-Musigny contribute to the wines’ minerality and complexity. With low production and exceptional quality, Domaine Georges Roumier’s wines are rare, sought-after treasures.

A Terroir analysis of Roumier’s Burgundy holdings

The soils of Chambolle-Musigny are a mosaic of limestone, marl, and clay. This unique combination imparts a delicate minerality and a strong sense of terroir to the wines. Musigny, with its ancient limestone soils, yields grapes of unparalleled quality while Bonnes Mares combines marl and limestone for powerful and beautifully complex wines.

Clos de Vougeot boasts deep, well-draining soils that contribute to wines with structure and depth, while Clos de la Bussière, a Premier Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis, reveals the nuanced terroir of its location with a balance of fruit and minerality. From a parcel located in Mazoyeres Chambertin, Roumier’s Charmes Chambertin is raised  0.27 ha Grand Cru parcel from relatively higher altitude (the upper and middle part of Mazoyeres Chambertin) and is known for crafting hedonistic, rich yet smooth expressions.

What’s the difference among the different labellings?

Ruchottes Chambertin This wine is made from a plot sharecropped between Christophe Roumier and Michel Bonnefond. A small part of the production is labeled under Michel Bonnefond’s name.

Georges & Christopher Roumier This is considered identical as Georges Roumier. Christophe is the grandson of founder Georges Roumier. He has been winemaker of this family domaine since 1990. He is considered to be the one that elevate his grandfather and father’s domaine to next level.

Jean Pierre Matthieu Roumier This wine is sold under two labels – Christophe Roumier, Charmes-Chambertin “Aux Mazoyères” and Jean-Pierre Mathieu Charmes-Chambertin “Aux Mazoyères”. The plot is owned by Jean-Pierre Mathieu, and Christophe Roumier of Domaine Georges Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny entered into a metayage agreement with the Mathieu family in 1984 renting a plot in the Mazoyères part of Charmes-Chambertin. A part of the harvest is sold under the Christophe Roumier label, and a part under the Jean-Pierre Mathieu label – although the wines are identical and made at Domaine Georges Roumier.

Laurent Roumier Laurent is also the grandson of Georges Roumier. He is the son of Alain Roumier, Georges’ eldest; and cousin of Christophe Roumier who now manages the family domain today. His father Alain Roumier was cellarmaster at Comte Georges de Vogue for 30 years.

Herve Roumier Herve is the older brother of Laurent Roumier and he established his own namesake winery back in 1978. It is one of the smallest and since Herve’s death, it has been capably managed by his widow Veronique. With a microscopic production of no more than 9000 bottles per year, Herve Roumier produces some of Burgundy’s best, and hardest-to-find Bonnes Mares and Clos de Vougeot.
