Sassicaia’s nearly 80-year journey began as a private experiment by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc at Tenuta San Guido in the 1940s. During this Private Era (1948–1967), the wine was consumed only by family and friends, as its robust, Bordeaux-style structure was initially rejected by local critics accustomed to light Sangiovese. Over time, the Marchese discovered that extended bottle aging transformed these “tough” wines into complex, elegant masterpieces, a realization that prompted the decision to go public.

The Commercial Breakthrough (1968–1980s) launched with the landmark 1968 vintage, released in 1971 under the technical guidance of enologist Giacomo Tachis. This era modernized production by introducing temperature-controlled steel fermentation and French oak barriques, replacing traditional large barrels.

  • Highlight Vintage (1968): The first public release, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon established the “Sassicaia myth” with a deep ruby color and refined bouquet of truffles, blackberries, and vanilla.
  • Highlight Vintage (1985): A global icon, it was the first Italian wine to receive a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker. It is celebrated for its “monumental” structure, incredible longevity, and a complex palate of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco that remains youthful even after 40 years.

In the Institutional Era (1990s–2010s), Sassicaia moved from “rebel” status to becoming its own official institution. In 1994, it became the only single estate in Italy granted its own unique appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. Winemaking during this period prioritized consistency and precision, resulting in wines characterized by polished tannins and intense mineral cores.

  • Highlight Vintage (2016): Another 100-point masterpiece, it defines the estate’s hallmark of “lithe marathon runners”—wines requiring a decade of aging to reveal serene aromatic profiles of sweet berries, wild flowers, and crushed minerals.

As of early 2026, Sassicaia enters a Modern Era focused on climate adaptation and site-specific management. Under the current leadership of Carlo Paoli and Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, the estate manages high-altitude vineyards to maintain freshness despite warmer Mediterranean summers.

  • Recent Release (2021): A “hallmark benchmark” vintage with pronounced acidity and ripe, well-extracted tannins, described as having immense aromatic finesse.
  • Current Release (2022): Described as vibrant and “pin-sharp,” featuring deeper magenta hues and Mediterranean herbal notes like rosemary and sage, alongside a harmonious balance of velvety tannins and mineral tension.

The estate continues to expand its legacy, with a new dedicated winery for its second wine, Guidalberto, expected to be fully integrated for the 2026 harvest, further refining the production of the Grand Vin.
